This Type of Exercise May Actually Help You Live Longer
The question
For older adults, a raft of research supports the health and longevity benefits of exercise, particularly aerobic activity. Might strength training, which helps build muscle and endurance, yield similar outcomes?
This study
Researchers analyzed data on 30,162 people 65 and older (average age, 74). About 10 percent regularly did some type of strength training. In a 15-year span, nearly a third of the participants died. People who did strength training at least twice a week were 46 percent less likely to have died for any reason than were those who strength-trained less often or not at all.
