What Are the Best Resistance Training Exercises?

Resistance training is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for adults of all ages. Beyond helping build and preserve muscle, resistance exercise has been associated with benefits for cardiovascular health, mental health, sleep and long-term physical functioning, according to research.

“Resistance training is associated with about 17% lower risk of heart disease, better heart disease risk factors – like slightly lower blood pressure and lipids, better body composition – and about 15% lower risk of mortality in adults,” says Dr. Abbi Lane, an associate professor of applied exercise science at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology. “Resistance training has been linked to reductions in depressive symptoms and better sleep.”

Resistance training can also improve strength, mobility and physical function, which can make everyday activities – such as carrying groceries, climbing stairs or getting up from a chair – easier to perform.
