What Does the Data Say About Obesity in America?
In 2024, at least 1 in 4 adults in all U.S. states and territories had obesity. These states had the highest percentage of adults with obesity in 2024, in descending order:
- West Virginia with 41.4%,
- Mississippi with 40.4%,
- Louisiana with 39.2%,
- Alabama and Arkansas with 38.9%,
- Indiana with 38.4%,
- Kansas and Nebraska with 37.6%,
- Wisconsin with 37.4%
- and Kentucky with 37.2%.
These states had the lowest percentage of adults with obesity in 2024, in ascending order:
- Colorado with 25%,
- Hawaii and Massachusetts with 27%,
- New Jersey with 27.7%,
- Vermont with 29%,
- California with 29.1%,
- New York with 29.5%,
- Florida with 29.6%
- and Montana and Utah with 31%.
