Could a TikTok Challenge Convince You to Eat More Plants?
I love a good viral challenge (except the Do-Nothing Challenge—yikes!). So when the 30 Plants a Week Challenge crossed my social media feed, I immediately signed up to give it a go. The premise? Eat at least 30 different types of plants in a week to give your gut microbiome a major boost—and make your doctor and your grandmother very happy.
And honestly, as a former vegetarian, it seemed like I’d be able to do this in my sleep. But the 30 Plants a Week Challenge? It was a little bit more challenging than I thought.
What’s Behind the 30 Plants a Week Challenge? It’s based on research by the American Gut Project, which found that people who ate more than 30 plants per week had a much more diverse and thriving gut microbiome than people who ate 10 or fewer plants—as all those plants fueled the growth of healthy gut microbes.
