What’s the Best Way to Keep the Weight Off After Stopping GLP-1s?

About one in eight American adults now uses a GLP-1 medication for weight loss, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. GLP-1s include Ozempic, Mounjaro, Wegovy, Zepbound and others.

GLP-1s are extraordinarily effective at what they are designed to do: they drive dramatic weight loss, improve metabolic health, and reduce sleep apnea. In emerging research, appear to curb addictive behaviors. But what happens when a GLP-1 is discontinued? Roughly half of people who start one are no longer taking it a year later, most often because of cost or side effects.

Getting off a GLP-1 can be tricky, especially for those who have lost considerable weight. Pooled data from trials show that about two-thirds of the lost weight returns within a year of stopping. The amount regained is proportional to the amount originally lost.
