Is There an Ideal Length for Intermittent Fasting?

INTERMITTENT FASTING is sort of a big deal right now. Much of its popularity has to do with its weight-loss benefits, but intermittent fasting (or “IF”) might also help with better digestion, blood sugar control, and brain function. Sounds pretty amazing, right?

But then there’s that daunting idea of not eating for long stretches of time. Maybe you’re worried about feeling hangry or having low-energy after not eating for several hours. And how long are you even supposed to fast for? What time of day is best?

First, it’s important to note that “fasting isn’t magic on its own,” explains Wesley McWhorter, DrPH, RD, a spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. What’s most important, regardless of your fasting schedule, “is pairing time-restricted eating with quality proteins, healthy fats, and a whole-food, high-fiber diet and mindful habits,” he says.
